Harrison Westerfield Memorial Scholarship

Harrison Westerfield Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor Harrison Westerfield, a very special young man who passed away on August 3rd, 2021, at the age of 21 after a heroic two-year battle with cancer.
Harrison was a National Merit Scholar and Eagle Scout from Overland Park, KS, who attended the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University on a full academic scholarship. He studied Computer Science/Computer Engineering his freshman year, while also serving as a research assistant and community volunteer. Prior to returning for his sophomore year in the fall of 2019, he was diagnosed with a very aggressive and rare form of Sarcoma cancer called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors (DSRCT). During the next two years Harrison was a true warrior, remaining hopeful, brave and strong as he endured numerous rounds of chemo, radiation, and several surgeries.
Although he wasn’t able to return to ASU, he turned a summer internship at Garmin into a job as a Software Engineer and worked for the company throughout his cancer battle. Harrison was very generous and donated much of his earnings to favorite charitable causes. He had a vision to improve the drink options for the patients and staff at the KU Cancer Clinic where he received his cancer treatment, resulting in the successful creation of Harrison’s Hydration Station. Harrison was a sweet soul who would want each of us to appreciate every day and fill every moment with kindness, loyalty, love and hugs!
